What is Limewash Paint? Professional Performance with Siena
In recent years, limewash paint has experienced a significant revival for interior designers and DIYers alike, valued for its deep historical roots and distinctive visual appeal. Being alkaline, lime is naturally resistant to mould and mildew spores, making it a far healthier coating. It is also vapour-open, meaning substrates can ‘breathe,’ allowing moisture to evaporate naturally from your walls.
What is limewash?
Traditionally composed of lime and water, the history of this natural finish dates back thousands of years, with its origins found in ancient civilisations, where it served as both a protective and decorative coating for various structures. This artisanal base is frequently enriched with mineral pigments and creates a unique, natural, and textured appearance.
The downside
Lime paints are naturally delicate finishes and are not designed to withstand the levels of everyday wear associated with modern living. While their breathability, health benefits, and sustainability credentials exceed those of conventional acrylic-based coatings, their low durability makes them far less practical in high-traffic areas and modern homes.
Siena, by Graphenstone – Decorative limewash with Modern performance
Siena maintains the artisanal lime base but reinforces it with Graphene technology to deliver timeless, natural ‘chiaroscuro’ effects with enhanced durability and resistance to everyday wear. You get the centuries-old aesthetic with 21st-century durability.

What is the difference?
- Traditional limewash paints are delicate, making them impractical for modern living. Siena uses Graphenstone’s innovative technology to deliver a natural limewash finish with Class 1 durability (tested to a Class 1 wet scrub rating), meaning that once fully cured, it is durable and washable.
- Modern, acrylic-based paints can form a ‘skin’ on the surface, trapping moisture. Siena has Class 1 vapour permeability (Sd < 0.02 m), allowing your walls to breathe – healthier for you and your home.
- Normal paint is flat and uniform. Limewash is alive. It creates a “chiaroscuro” effect – a soft, cloudy movement that reacts beautifully to light.
- Siena absorbs CO2 from the air as it cures (the majority in the first 30 days following application), helping to create a cleaner, healthier environment.
Where to use Siena
Siena is an interior finish for walls and ceilings and is a versatile, healthy choice for almost any indoor space, from bedrooms and living areas to dining rooms and studies. Easy to apply, Siena is a 2-coat system applied onto a prepared, mist-coated or primed surface.
Colour trends for 2026

How to create a limewash effect with Siena
Some frequently asked questions about Limewash and decorative paints
Q: Limewash isn’t hard-wearing – what can I do?
Using our unique formulas and innovative Graphenstone technology, Siena achieves the highest scrub rating, making it both washable and durable. Suitable for domestic, retail, and commercial applications.
Q: Is it easy to use?
Siena is a very easy paint to use, allowing you to create a range of different effects and finishes by varying your application methods. Apply in a ‘criss cross’ or random ‘cloud-like’ patterns with sweeping movements, overlapping the paint on each coat. There is no right or wrong way to create your finish – have fun and experiment!
Q: Is there any special preparation needed?
In general, all you need is 2 coats applied onto a prepared, mist-coated, or primed surface. Dilute the paint with 0-5% clean water for a more traditional wash effect, or up to 50% for a patina or glaze effect.
Q: What tools are best for applying a limewash effect?
A good-quality, dense block brush is ideal. We have developed a range of high-quality brushes to help you achieve your decorative limewash effect with ease. Apply in thin layers rather than thick coats for a soft, natural finish.
Q: Can I use it in Kitchens and Bathrooms?
Yes. Siena can be used, however, as it is a very flat matte finish (approximately 1% sheen), areas exposed to high humidity, splashing or more frequent cleaning will benefit from an additional protective coating to improve durability and resistance to moisture and staining.
Limewash is no longer simply a ‘delicate’ heritage choice. Siena is a high-performance, breathable, and durable option for any modern interior. It protects the building, delivers a refined aesthetic, and ensures a professional finish that is designed to last.
